Cape Wind is ready to meet 75% of the Cape and Islands electricity needs by providing local, clean, and renewable utility-scale energy with negligible environmental impacts. The nation’s first offshore wind farm will generate jobs and lower wholesale electricity prices. And most importantly, Cape Wind would mark the birth of the US offshore wind industry, which if fully deployed could radically reduce national energy sector emissions and create hundreds of thousands of good green jobs.
Yet after 12 years, with the first federal offshore wind lease and all of its federal and state permits in hand, Cape Wind still hasn’t begun construction. There’s only one obstacle that remains: Bill Koch.
Fossil fuels billionaire and brother to the deadly energy duo of Charles and David Koch, Bill has spent millions from his personal fortune and corporate treasury to obstruct and delay Cape Wind. The Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound, an astroturf front group chaired and primarily funded by Koch, has dutifully distributed misinformation and disinformation for years, manipulating the public with phony environmental, economic, and cultural objections, all of which have been repeatedly dismissed and discredited under regulatory and court review. And now, after enlisting the Barnstable Town Council and town attorneys as a second front in his frivolous litigation campaign, Koch’s collaborators are pressuring Congress to refuse a federal loan guarantee to a project that is so clearly in the national interest.
We’ve had it. We won’t stand by while sea levels rise, oceans acidify, storms intensify, droughts wither our crops, and floods drown our cities. We are willing to fight for clean power and the green economy, and we won’t allow Bill Koch and his Alliance to stand in our way. It’s time to Build Cape Wind!
